Oven Poll

So, Ladies, what kind of oven do you have and what do you like about it? The Sears repair tech came this morning and gave us the bad news. The circuit board is bad and needs to be replaced.

Parts + Labor = $500. That's about the cost of a lower end oven. And parts only have a 90 day warranty.

Hmmm. I guess we're going to buy a new oven, sigh. The things that I want in my range/oven are: glass cooktop, convection oven, cakes/bread setting. Looks like we'll be shopping for ovens this weekend. As for the party on Sunday, well, I'm going to get hamburgers and dessert and stuff at Costco. I'll maybe make a pasta salad with the gigantic head of cabbage we got from CSA.

My other question is, what do you like to do with your cabbage? I prefer mine to be cooked, as raw cabbage, um is difficult to digest.

I'm also going to be looking for a very similar oven/range in the next 2ish years so I'll be interested to see what you find! Best Buy has had some deals on LG or GE that peaked our interest.

I like to make eggrolls or Matt makes cabbage stew. There's also always coleslaw, but then you have the raw problem.

GL!

For a great cabbage recipe, we love cabbage and kielbasa. You cook several strips of bacon, then remove and reserve, then saute onions and garlic in the bacon grease. Add water (1/4 c) and sugar (1 T) and red pepper flakes, cook for ~1 min. Add 1 head cabbage, rough chop. Cook 10 min. Stir well. Add sliced kielbasa, cook another 10. Serve with chopped bacon on top. It's divine in the winter, and reheats well.
No oven advice, I'm afraid. We assumed ours with the current house; it's fine but not spectacular.

I have a Frigidaire lower end model. I bought it because Best Buy was running a deal on stainless steel Frigidaire appliances before we put the house on the market. I hate it. I have mixed feelings about the glass top, but I guess I do prefer it to the "old style". Besides that...it is terribly insulated. Leaks heat out of every place possible. Takes forever to pre-heat. And the drawer underneath is too small for all the cookie sheets that I used to store under my old oven. And I hate the stainless appliances. I did it for the look to "sell" the house. Lesson learned: never buy something you won't love living with. Good luck!

We bought a Kenmore range when we moved into this house, since I couldn't deal with the 1980's goldenrod one! It doesn't have all the features you're looking for, but we've been happy with it. Do you get Consumer Reports? We do and save all the back issues, so let me know if you want me to see if they have recent ratings.

I've heard good things about the LG, but apparently the oven part takes a long time to heat up (longer then most). I'd look for a self cleaning oven (most are), as they are better insulated supposedly. I hate it when the whole house gets hot just because I want to bake something.

my parents have consumer reports, so i've been stealing their mags and reading them. we've got LG washers and dryers that are good, but i don't think CR liked the LG ovens.

I'm curious about the cabbage and kielbasa recipe, M, but we've got a Muslim couple who don't do pork. we'll have to try that the next time we get a big ol' cabbage.

yeah, mel, i hate the stainless steel too. impossible to keep clean.

and, yep...self cleaning...I forgot to put that as a requirement!
thanks for all your imput!
